The Postcard Project: Standing with Courageous Judges and Lawyers

Purpose and Vision

The Postcard Project was created to honor and support members of the judiciary and legal community who have demonstrated exceptional courage in defending constitutional principles, civil rights, and the rule of law.

How It Works

Each month, Town Square Democracy identifies ten judges and ten lawyers whose recent decisions, statements, or acts of conscience exemplify professional integrity. The list changes every three to four weeks to reflect current developments and to expand the circle of acknowledgment.

Participants — individuals and community groups — pick up packets containing postcards, names, and background notes for each recipient. Dozens of cards are sent to every honoree, arriving from across the country in waves of support.

The postcards themselves are distinctive:

  • Judges are depicted in classic black robes against blue backgrounds, holding a golden shield and gavel — a symbol of their role as democracy's defenders.
  • Lawyers appear in light-blue suits on soft beige backgrounds, rendered in a pencil-textured vintage style that conveys calm strength and resolve.

These illustrations have become visual emblems of the campaign, signaling dignity, gratitude, and solidarity without partisanship.

Distribution is intentionally community-based — through bookstores, cafés, businesses, and theater venues such as Noe Valley Books, Manny's Café, and Café La Boheme, Z-Space — to reach people where civic life intersects with everyday life. We are in the process of scaling the project statewide in California and nationally where participants are available, reaching out to civic and professional organizations, colleges, and schools.

The cards invite conversation and participation from those who may not otherwise be politically engaged.

Impact So Far

Thousands of postcards have already been circulated across California, and the response has been strikingly positive.

  • Judges and lawyers have written back expressing appreciation for the encouragement and moral support.
  • Community members report that the act of writing and sending a postcard deepens their understanding of judicial independence and the personal stakes of defending democracy.
  • Venues and partners have found that displaying the cards and flyers sparks spontaneous public discussions about justice and civic responsibility.

This project bridges art and activism, gratitude and education. It translates an abstract civic principle — the rule of law — into a personal, relational experience. In the process, it builds a culture of appreciation for those who keep democratic institutions strong.

Why This Matters

In an era of polarized politics and misinformation, public confidence in the legal system depends on citizens recognizing and supporting integrity in action. The Postcard Project offers a small but tangible way to affirm that courage in the legal profession matters — not only to the courts, but to the future of democratic life itself.

Our message is simple:

A courageous judge is democracy's shield — and so is a courageous lawyer.

We invite progressive legal organizations, scholars, and practitioners to collaborate — by helping identify honorees, hosting pickup stations, or encouraging members to participate. Together, we can ensure that those who uphold the law know they are seen, valued, and supported.
